Choosing a position
A person may run as a candidate for only one position on a school board council per election, either as chair or commissioner. They may run in only one English-language school board and in only one electoral division of that board.

In Québec, a commissioner on a school board plays a crucial role in shaping education policies and decisions at the local level. Their responsibilities typically include:
- Adopting By-laws such as the Code of
Ethics for Commissioners, such as the delegation of powers to the Director
General - Policy Making such as the Safe,
Respectful and Drug-Free Environment in Schools, such as the Enrolment Criteria
for Registration and such as the Policy on Transportation - Adoption of the Budget
- Approval of construction projects
Overall, commissioners play a vital role in promoting the success and well-being of students within their community by providing governance, leadership, and oversight.
The Chair is also the school board’s spokesperson.
Eligibility
You don’t have to be a homeowner or pay school taxes to run in a school election. However, a person must be eligible to have their name entered on the list of electors of the school board they are running for, and on polling day, have been domiciled in its territory for at least six months.
