Welcome to the School Tax page.

This section provides everything you need to know about school tax invoices, payment methods, due dates, and helpful resources. We aim to make your experience clear and straightforward.

  • The 2025-2026 school taxation invoices were mailed on July 4, 2025
  • The annual invoices are mailed out every July & the period covered corresponds to the school year; July 1st to June 30th of the following year.
  • Please note that even if you do not have access to your invoice (due to lost mail, postal delays, change of ownership, etc.), this does not exempt you from your responsibility to pay school taxes.
  • Payments must be made in a manner that ensure deadlines are respected.
  • The Government of Québec sets the school taxation rate and for the 2025-2026 taxation year, it is 0.08423$ per 100$ of property evaluation.
  • Riverside School Board covers the territory of six (6) francophone school service centers:
    • Sorel-Tracy
    • Saint-Hyacinthe
    • Hautes-Rivieres
    • Marie-Victorin
    • des Patriotes
    • Grandes-Seigneuries
  • To locate your territory, please consult the Carte interactive des réseaux d’enseignement du Québec.

There are two installment dates for school taxation: August 8, 2025 and November 8, 2025.

  • If your invoice total is under $300, the full amount is due on August 8.
  • If your invoice total is $300 or more, the amount is split into two equal installments: 50% due on August 8 and 50% due on November 8.

Please note that the interest rate is charged on late payments at the rate set by the Quebec government, currently 8% per year.  This rate may change without prior notice in accordance with Article 316 of the Québec Education Act (LIP).

Please note that in-person payments at the school taxation counter are no longer accepted.

Payments can be made using any of the following methods:

  • Online banking using the 20-digit reference number found on your invoice (please see detailed instructions below)
  • At your financial institution
  • By mail, sending a cheque payable to the Riverside School Board – Taxation to the following address:

Case Postale/P.O. box 11652
Succursale Centre-ville
Montréal (Québec)
H3C 6B5

  • Through your mortgage broker; if applicable.  Please note that it is the homeowner’s responsibility to provide their annual invoice to the mortgage broker.

Online banking payments:

Payments made through online banking are the recommended method, as they help prevent delays and allow for faster processing and tracing.  If this is your first time paying through online banking, please add “Riverside – taxes” as a new payee.  Please be aware that the payee name may vary slightly depending on how your financial institution lists our account.  When searching, use the keyword “Riverside” and select the appropriate payee from the results.

Please note that the taxation account is entirely separate from the daycare and school fees accounts, so it is important to choose the correct payee.

Use the 20-digit reference number found on your invoice/statement of account when submitting your payment.  Each property has its own unique reference number.  If you move or have multiple properties, you must ensure the correct reference number is being used.

Please note that online payments may take 3-5 business days to be received and reflected in our system.  We are unable to view or confirm payments prior to this processing period.  Important: Interest ceases to accrue as of the date the payment is made.

  • Any unpaid balances as of the due dates will incur fixed interest charges set by the Québec government, as outlined in the Québec Education Act (LIP, art. 316)
  • Fees will be applied to the account in the following situations:
    • Returned cheques due to insufficient funds or an incorrect account.
    • Withdrawal or deferral of post-dated cheques
    • Repeated use of an incorrect reference number when making online payments
  • Reimbursements issued by cheque are subject to a $10.00 administrative fee.
  • Please note that no official receipt is issued.  It is recommended that you retain the upper part of your taxation invoice for your records as it may be of use for your income tax declaration.
  • If your children attend a public school under the jurisdiction of the Riverside School Board, you must pay school taxes to the Riverside School Board (Québec Education Act, Section 304).
  • If your children attend a public school under the jurisdiction of the Riverside School Board AND a school under the jurisdiction of a French school board, you must pay taxes to both school boards.  The school taxes are proportional to the to number of children attending each school board and will be split accordingly.
  • If you do not have children attending a public school under the jurisdiction of a French or English school board, you may pay school taxes to the school board of your choice (Québec Education Act, Sections 305 & 306).
  • To switch and pay to a different school board than what your property is currently registered to, kindly complete the Notice to Taxpayer Form and email it back to taxation@rsb.qc.ca before April 1st.

Notice to Taxpayer’s Form

Link to form

A form is to be filled out for each property.  Fill out all the spaces with the correct information.  If there is more than one property owner, kindly ensure that all owners sign the form before submitting it.

Once done, you must send it to us before April 1st, 2026.  We will exchange the information with the corresponding Service Center, and you will be invoiced by the stipulated institution beginning July 1st, 2026, for the school year 2026-2027.

  • Please note that it is the property that is taxed and not the person, so if you are a new owner and receive a school taxation invoice with the previous owners’ names on it, it is still your responsibility as the new owner to pay the invoice.  If this occurs, please send us an email at taxation@rsb.qc.ca with the full names of all the new owners so we can update your file.
  • Every property is assigned to either the French or the English school board for taxation purposes.  This designation remains in effect until a Notice to Taxpayers form is completed and emailed to us (see French or English School Board? section for further details).  As a new homeowner, it is your responsibility to contact us should you wish to request a change.  If no change has been processed, the invoice issued – whether by the French or English school board – must be paid.
  • If you have sold your property in recent months and have received a school taxation invoice for the property which you are no longer the owner, kindly send us an email to advise us of the sale so we can update the file.

Riverside School Board provides an internet service to access and use data pertaining to school taxation.  You may register for the consultation site by completing and signing the agreement form.

A fee of $25.00 will be charged per consultation.  You may always consult your statement of account by logging into your account.  Any delay in payment of the required fees will result in an interruption of service.
