As we wrap up another school year, here are a few important topics we would like to share with you before the summer holidays. Thank you for your continued support throughout the year. Wishing you a wonderful, restful summer!

We look forward to welcoming students back on September 2nd for the first day of school.

Province-Wide Ban on Cellphones

Important policy change that will take effect at the start of the new school year.

In accordance with new directives issued by the Ministère de l’Éducation du Québec (MEQ), our schools will be implementing updated cell phone regulations for all students.

Effective September 2:

  • Cell phone use will not be permitted anywhere on school property during the school day, unless specifically authorized by school administration (i.e. medical adaptation).
  • All cell phones must be turned off and stored in lockers upon arrival and must remain out of sight until the end of the school day.
  • Use of phones during class time, lunch, recess, in restrooms, or between classes is not allowed.
  • Earbuds, headphones, smartwatches, and other personal electronic devices must also be stored in lockers and may not be used to communicate or access the internet during school hours.
  • If a student needs to contact a parent or guardian, they will be permitted to do so through the school office.

These new regulations reflect the MEQ’s commitment to reducing distractions, supporting student well-being, and promoting a learning environment that prioritizes engagement and respect.

We appreciate your support in helping students adjust to these changes and encouraging responsible use of technology. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s school administrators.

Budget Update – Ministry Reductions

We are confirming that we have received significant budget cuts from the Ministry of Education. Our team is currently analyzing the situation carefully, taking all factors into consideration. The proposed budget will be presented at the Council of Commissioners meeting in September. We remain committed to making the best possible decisions for our students, staff, and school communities, and we thank you for your understanding and continued support.

RSB Parents’ Committee: A Strong Voice for Public Education

School boards in Québec have a Parents’ Committee, which plays a vital role in the education system. Composed of parent representatives from each school, the committee ensures that parents’ voices are heard in decision-making processes that affect students and their learning environments. It provides input to the school board on various matters, from educational policies to student services, and helps strengthen the partnership between families and schools. This collaboration promotes transparency, supports student success and encourages greater parental involvement in public education.

At Riverside, the Parents’ Committee has an active Facebook page where they share updates, resources, and opportunities for parents to get involved. The English Parents Committee Association (EPCA), representing parents from English school boards across Québec, also maintains a Facebook presence. We encourage parents to visit and follow these pages, especially during this critical time when budget cuts in education are affecting our schools. Parents can make a real difference—your voice matters.

The Québec English School Boards Association (QESBA) also has a Facebook page where they share key updates and advocacy efforts.
