We were honoured to welcome Mr. Timothy Armstrong to Riverside School Board for a moving Indigenous Blanket Exercise. Having worked with many of our schools over the past five years, Mr. Armstrong brought his knowledge, expertise, and deep commitment to sharing Indigenous history with our community.
The Blanket Exercise is an interactive and immersive learning experience that helps participants understand Indigenous history, including the profound impacts of colonization, treaties, and residential schools. It encourages dialogue, reflection, and a deeper understanding of the relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada.
Participants described the experience as profound and deeply touching, gaining a new perspective and a stronger appreciation for the resilience and strength of Indigenous communities. Many shared that it sparked meaningful conversations and a lasting awareness that will continue to influence their learning and teaching practices.
We are grateful to Mr. Armstrong for guiding us through this important journey, and to everyone who took part in this transformative learning experience. This exercise is a step forward in building understanding, empathy, and connection within our school communities.
